Pet waste is a persistent environmental pollutant that can take up to a year to fully decompose.  Leaving it in your yard poses a great health risk to yourself, your pet, and others and can contaminate the soil with harmful bacteria and parasites making it unsafe for gardening or landscaping.

Pathogen and Parasite Presence

Pet waste, dog poop specifically, contains bacteria and parasites, some of which are zoonotic, meaning they cause diseases that spread between animals and humans.

Bacteria such as:

  • E. coli
  • Salmonella
  • Campylobacter

these bacteria can cause diarrhea, vomiting, other illnesses

coronavirus, viruses, germs

Parasites such as:

  • Giardia
  • Roundworms
  • Tapeworms
  • Hookworms
  • Whipworms

The most common way a dog contracts worms is by walking or playing in soil that has been contaminated by the feces of infected dogs.  Up to 50% of dog waste may contain parasites like worms, coccidia, or giardia.

Water Pollution

water, raindrops, raining

Pet waste contains disease causing organisms and can be washed into waterways by stormwater, rain, melting snow, and flooding, resulting in water quality issues. It contains nitrogen and phosphorus, which can cause algal blooms in rivers, creeks, and lakes that use up oxygen and harm aquatic life. When pet waste decays in water, it can release ammonia, which combined with warm temperatures and low oxygen levels can kill fish and other aquatic life.

Hygiene

Did you know that dogs and cats will not allow feces anywhere near where they eat or sleep? So, if they accidentally step in their mess or a mess left behind another animal, they will lick it off themselves as part of their instinctive grooming process.  Aside from this being gag inducing, this is unhealthy and can make them very sick.  Organic matter that can harm your pet begins to grow in feces as it sits out in the environment.  Some dogs may even roll around in poop (scent rolling) and track it into your vehicle and/or home.

Flystrike

housefly, house fly, fly

Leaving pet feces outdoors will quickly attract bugs and an abundance of flies within minutes, especially during the summer months.  Once they’ve located the feces, they will likely pursue your pets as a food source, which leads to flystrike. Flystrike happens when an animal becomes a host for flies to lay their eggs. This can ultimately lead to the tips of your dog’s or cat’s ears bleeding, or worse, an infection with fly larvae (maggots), which is painful and requires veterinarian attention.
